Group 2

Anyone talking about a serious subject such as safe sex to a group of people can always bring the pressure down by using humor. Like Pedro on page 97, panel five in the book "Pedro and Me" by Judd Winick. In this panel Pedro is talking with a group of people about practicing safer sex; to do so, he shows them the importance of a condom. Pedro explains to the crowd, "If your partner says a condom is to tight--tell them to see a doctor'' (Winick 97). In this panel there is a halo light around Pedro; the rest of the panel is black as Pedro's demonstration is to be the readers full focus. His face shows humor by his open, upturned mouth and the way his eyebrows are cocked upward in the middle. The tendon on his neck popping out, along with the diagonal wrinkle lines in his forehead shows the amount of strain it is putting on him to stretch the condom to it's fullest capacity. His arms are drawn up in the air as if to say....TADA!! This panel fits the book "Pedro and Me'' because it illustrates a part of what Pedro does for a living, an AIDS prevention speaker, and how he uses humor to relate to and capture his audience's attention. Without humor, this panel would not have been an effective demonstration, as most people would have looked away, maybe snickered, and definitely felt uncomfortable.

  1. I think the fact that you stated that without humor it would have just been awkward and uncomfortable. I totally agree with that. Talking to a group of teenagers about sex is an akward thing and also him being gay might make it more uncomfortable, but not for Pedro. He gets up their with confidence and teaches them with the use of humor which perhaps is why he was such an effective speaker.

  2. This was probably one of the two funniest moments in the book(other than the shits). This was not only a way for Winick to humor the reader a little, it was also funny to the audience to which Pedro was speaking. I would call it an ice-breaker. Even though the subject matter is adult in nature, it necessary for young people to be educated and entertained when speaking on a topic as serious as HIV. Pedro's humor provided a great outlook for someone in his position.

  3. I agree with Dale that this is one of the humorous points in Winick. I really like this panel and the impact it has. Like Winick said later it was a result of Pedro's getting taken advantage of. Good job on this panel.

  4. I agree with Dale and Ravi about this panel being particularly funny. The only problem I'm having with your response here is that it could include more attention to little details. The only thing you point out as far as little details go is "the dark halo light." This is nice, but is there more that you could pay attention to here? Clearly you understand the theme, but how do the little details show the theme? Talk more about this--that's part of effective visual analysis.

  5. I really thought this panel was funny as well. He really did cut out the awkwardness by using humor and being very blunt about it. I think it is all about the presentation and the confidence of the speaker. You have to be able to believe what they are saying and feel comfortable with them. Pedro really did do this in the panel. The only thing I would suggest is paying more attention to the details, such as expressions and such. Other than that, nice job.

  6. HAHA, this is a very funny panel and I actually saw the video of Pedro saying this to an audience when I watched MTV's The real World. However, I do think ou could have added more detail about the the panel such as lighting, expression, etc. instead of just describing the panel.

  7. You’re completely right, this panel would be a whole lot different without humor. It would be awkward. You did a good job describing what is in the panel, and make note of the lighting. I am wondering if there are any other details you could include, perhaps the expression on his face is unique. He has the condom stretched out very far, adding to the humor of what he is saying.

  8. I too thaought this panel was really funny. I even had to show my husband! I feel you did a wonderful job analyzing this panel. Humor does crack the ice on a lot of sticky subjects, specialy with the younger generations. I feel it make them relate better.

  9. This is one of those moments where you're reading and you start laughing. Then you get strange looks from other people. The panel really shows how Pedro could connect with audiences and make a touchy subject much more comfortable.

  10. I really liked the topic sentence and how it uses humor to bring the pressure down. This was one of my favorite frames in the book, but I love humor. I also liked how you said this panel fits because it illustrates what Pedro does for a living. You did a very nice job.

  11. I loved this scene. I don't think there was a point in the book where I was laughing harder. Great work with dissecting the panel though. It really made the scene as a whole that much funnier.
