Group 5

In the novel Pedro and Me there are several themes; one of which is friendship. The panel we chose shows part of that friendship. The specific panel is on page 90 when Judd asks Pedro “Is that bad?” This shows that Pedro is sick in some capacity and that Judd is concerned about it. While you don’t know exactly why he’s sick from this one panel, you can tell that something isn’t right with him. It fits with the rest of the book in showing Judd and Pedro’s friendship and giving insight into how it grew. The panel also gives you a little more insight visually by the use of a lamp that is turned on by Judd’s bed. The conversation itself is short and to the point, showing concern for Pedro and what may be wrong with him. While the conversation is simple, there are details in the panel that give more away. For example, the bold print on Pedro’s sheets will draw your eyes. The symbolism of Judd getting out of bed showing concern and a readiness to aid his friend also gives more detail than words itself. You can see from this one panel that their friendship is starting to grow, and will play a big part throughout the novel

  1. this was a very good panel to choose from. I think that this was ultimately a turning point in Judd and Pedros friendship. It defiantly shows how much Judd actually does care for Pedro and is concerned for him. He is willing to help him in any way. It also shows how Pedro does not want to try and make a big deal of it. He just says that it is not a good thing. He does not freak out and feel sorry for himself per say. I really think you guys picked apart this panel very well!

  2. You did very well with the analysis of this panel. I liked how you showed judd's concern for his friend. As Nicole said this was a turning point in their friendship. I dont think the quote really proved that Pedro was sick but the look on his face did.

  3. I like your analysis of this panel. It is very descriptive that I could picture the panel and could almost remember which one it was without even looking. I don’t see any mention of when Pedro says “It’s not good”. (Winick 90) If you had added that part, it would have even described the scene even more, as it shows that Pedro was also very scared. Your words flowed nicely and it was a very touching panel to choose. Good work all.

    Who wrote Pedro and me?

  4. When you mentioned Judd getting out of bed to help his friend, I found this to be a powerful moment in the book. Judd's concern, and genuine friendship has driven him to become thoughtful and loyal to Pedro no matter what the circumstances. I think your analysis of the situation was great. You noticed the differences in shading and lighting here. When the reader notices these subtle details it provides a sense of emotion and connection. We have all felt sad or happy, and the light is used to convey the overall mood and feeling there.

  5. I agree that friendship is important in this novel, but you can't simply state that "friendship" is a theme. "Friendship" is a subject, not a theme. Remember from the literary analysis lecture: a theme needs to be stated as a universal message. So...what about "friendship" is trying to be conveyed here? Also, I'd include more attention to small details--how and why are they important?

  6. I think this was a very good panel of choice for your group and you pointed out some very important things. I agree about the light pointed to Pedro's bed and Judd's urgency to help his dick friend, even if that means getting out of bed. Also I liked that your paragraph didn't sound very choppy as compared to others. Good job!

  7. I thought you chose a panel here that was important to the story. It seems to be the point where Pedro's disease is brought to the front of Judd's mind, where it remains for the rest of the story. Judd getting out of bed, in what looks like the middle of the night, was a good thing to pick up on. It would have been helpful to mention a little bit about their facial expressions and more about the dialogue. When Judd asks "Is that bad?," it's a point where he realizes the disease is catching up with Pedro.

  8. I think you really made some nice points. Friendship is tested in hardships. Judd was completely willing to help his friend. He also took action. At this very sensitive time took care of Pedro. You have done a nice job explaining the friendship is just beginning and will continue to grow.

He was always there for him when he needed him the most WELL DONE
