Group 4

Helplessness is a hurtful emotion that we can feel deep in our soul. In this panel we see Judd’s shoulders are hunched and they both have long, sad faces. This is provides an indication that they are feeling helpless. They are barely looking at each other; Pedro is hanging his head in embarrassment. He has had night sweats, and when he wakes up form the dampness on his shirt and bed sheets, the spotlight is shining on him symbolizing the illness of HIV becoming front and center(Winick #91, panel 1). It almost appears as though the spotlight is from one of his speeches. But now instead being the one to inform the public on HIV, he is being debilitated by it. But now the spotlight isn’t Pedro’s story, it’s his illness. Even though Judd and Pedro are the best of friends, there is a mutual understanding that they are both helpless in fighting this disease. Though Pedro is ill in this panel, Judd is looking to him for guidance and direction on what he can do to help his friend.

I could not edit this blog, so I made the necessary changes and re-posted the paragraph. I hope this sounds better.

  1. You did a very good job analyzing this panel, the picture says a lot, even without utilizing written words. This is one of the first times that Judd is able to see the disease interfere with and become a part of Pedro’s life. I agree with your idea that the disease is front and center in this panel. Good work on your analyzing.

  2. I feel your group did a very good job interpating this panel. I felt the same symobilism with the way the light was fouced on Pedro. I feel that is is the time that judd knew this disease was for real, and its not so easy to ddeal with. I feel that judd has come to grips that this is a life threating disease.

  3. Helplessness is a great one word summary of this panel. I agree that it shows in their faces and postures. This is one of the many panels where the little details of the drawing tell big parts of the story. I also like the use of "front and center" when describing Pedro's disease; from that point on in the story its constantly on everyone's mind.

  4. Your group did a good job of analyzing this panel. I thought you did a good job of describing the different parts of the panel. I didn't think of the comparison between this panel and him giving his speech.

  5. You guys did a great job. I think that if your first paragraph is very strong and really sums up this panel. I think that it would have been a lot stronger if you went into more detail about what the panel looked like and the colors it was using but you can really understand how Pedro is feeling right now!
