Ho, not to be confused with the words "hoe" like the gardening tool, or "ho" in the phrase ho ho ho that is commonly used by jolly folk in red suits, is a slang term for a prostitute or whore. A whore/prostitute is someone who will perform sexual acts if payment can be arranged. The payment does not have to be money, but many times it is. One is advised not to go around saying this word as it has a negative connotation but the more it is used in popular culture, the less impact it has on the recipient. It may be acceptable to use around your close friends but will be viewed as a derogatory term to older generations. For example, if I were to say "Hey ho, what u doing" to my best friend, she would not be offended. On the other hand, if I said that same phrase to my grandmother she would be highly offended. So, it is up to you to use your better judgment when using the term "ho".

hello my name is thien from vietnam.I just have a few questions for you. I was just thinking, does that mean I can call any of my friends a ho and they wont be offended? So is it only used for women? Why would anyone want to call their friend a ho anyway?

ReplyDeleteI know if a friend of mine called me a ho, I would be very offended. People need to be careful when they use a negative word, even in fun. I had to read the first sentance twice, because it was so long between the Ho, and , is a slang term for prostitute or whore. I enjoyed reading about what it is not though. :-)
ReplyDeleteThere are only certain people I can call ho out of my friends, but there are some who get really offended. I think you did a great job defining the term. The intro to your paragraph was a little confusing. I think it would have been more understood if you split up the first sentance. otherwise great job!

ReplyDeleteDedre from Russia here; I understand your definitions and have had heard other people call their friends Ho's. Most days I think people only use that because they can't think of anything more creative to say. I have heard this term on American MTV it was very confusing. Thanks again.
