Group 2 - Wasted
"Skip was totally wasted last night." In the previous sentence, wasted is being used as a slang term. If you take the Webster's dictionary definition of wasted, you might have a hard time figuring out why Skip laid waste to something last night. Using the example, it means Skip was completely intoxicated due to the use of alcohol or drugs. Another example of the word wasted being used as slang would be, "Skip wasted that guy in the Halo." In this example, wasted means that Skip beat someone in a game, usually with violence. Depending on the context, the word "wasted" can mean several things, positive and negative. But amongst young people today, if you hear, "Jim got wasted and ran around with no pants on," you can bet it relates to intoxication.

Can't wasted mean other things besides intoxication and beating someone? What about wasted land? Wasted resources? Wasted paper? How do these things all fit in with the definition? Are you saying that they don't? Per.

ReplyDeleteJim from England here. I never realized that wasted had so many definitions. I always thought of it as losing or not using something. I'll never understand you chaps from across the pond. Thanks for the explanations of what wasted means. Also, have you been following me recently? I swear it was only for a couple minutes.

ReplyDeleteI understand that you were defining the slang terms for wasted. I also agree that to understand the slang terms, you must also know the context of all the other terms for the same word. I believe this is why english is one of the hardest to learn. Good job on the examples.

I thought you did a great job defining the term wasted as a slang word. When I think of a slang word I dont always think of wasted land or paper. You all did a great job explaining each statement you made.

I liked how you gave three examples of using the word wasted. It helped me really understand how the word would be used. You did a great job.
ReplyDeletehi I am Aga from turkey. wasted in turkish is bosa, We too use this term in turkey. But not the slang meanings. I find it very difficult to learn the english languge for there are many different meaning for the same word.

I didn't understand any of this until reading these slang definitions. So get me right, this means that they want to use violence on me?
